The Person-Centered Montessori Abilities System™ (PCMAS) represents a different approach from the typical “mental status exam.” For the most part, these exams serve either to diagnose dementia or to classify an individual in terms of the stage of the progression of dementia. For care partners , the information provided by a single “score” does not provide much actionable information. In addition, that score may look very different between different people. They also do not allow any assistance, so we never find out how much help someone may need in order to do something for themselves. Such information is critical is creating plans of care.
In alignment with a Montessori approach that stresses engagement and error free learning, the PCMAS provides comprehensive information that can be used to develop a person-centered care plan. Based on decades of research, it is now ready for memory care communities around the world to begin focusing on what an individual person can do and to use that information to give them the best quality of life.
